What is the difference between European and South American webbing sling?
Beginning
For many years, European brands have been highly trusted in the South American lifting market. However, more and more South American manufacturers are now producing high-quality and cost-effective webbing slings locally.
Although many of these manufacturers continue to follow a 7:1 safety factor, their product specifications can be different from traditional European designs.
One interesting example is webbing width.
| Rated Capacity | European Width | South American Width | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 ton | 30 mm | 25 mm | -5 mm |
| 2 tons | 60 mm | 50 mm | -10 mm |
| 3 tons | 90 mm | 75 mm | -15 mm |
| 4 tons | 120 mm | 100 mm | -20 mm |
| 5 tons | 150 mm | 125 mm | -25 mm |
| 6 tons | 180 mm | 150 mm | -30 mm |
| 7 tons | 210 mm | 175 mm | -35 mm |
| 8 tons | 240 mm | 200 mm | -40 mm |
| 9 tons | 270 mm | 225 mm | -45 mm |
| 10 tons | 300 mm | 250 mm | -50 mm |
| 12 tons | — | 300 mm | — |
What does this difference mean?
The South American specification reduces the width while maintaining the basic 7:1 safety factor.
A narrower webbing sling can be designed with a greater webbing thickness, which may provide better resistance to abrasion, cutting and everyday wear. Under appropriate working conditions, this can potentially help improve the sling’s durability and service life.
Of course, sling performance is not determined by width alone. Webbing material, construction, stitching, manufacturing quality, testing, working conditions and applicable standards all play important roles.
